Cupolone Suspension Lamp
The classically cool Cupolone Suspension Lamp was created by Elio Martinelli for lighting design company Martinelli Luce.
Martinelli Luce was founded by Elio Martinelli in the 1950s. Born in Tuscany, the designer studied set design at the Institute of Fine Arts in Florence before joining his father's lighting business. As he began to develop the brand, his products quickly became known for simplicity and inspiration drawn from natural materials. Today they remain one of the best-loved design companies in Italy.
The Cupolone Suspension Lamp is a lesson in pared-down structural style. Made from aluminium strips which are overlaid to create a semi-circular dome, it brings to mind Saturn and the solar system. The lamp may be contemporary but it also pays homage to the modernism of the 1950s and 60s, and will seem at home in both commercial and residential spaces. Due to its large diameter, it must be given the space to shine.
