Eames Plywood Mobile
The Eames Plywood Mobile was designed by Charles and Ray Eames for the Vitra label.
The highly revered Eames couple started work in the 1940s by developing a new method of moulding plywood and, in turn, creating a wide range of innovative plywood products. These experiments extended into the creations of adaptable, flexible storage units and furniture for public spaces and homes. The Eames couple is one of the only design teams to have created its own production methods and machinery to complete its product lines. the designers started fashioning different objects with biomorphic shapes inspired by Ray's experience in the fields of graphic design and art. The married couple hung the Eames Plywood Mobile from their own Los Angeles apartment ceiling.
The Eames Plywood Mobile comprises two organically shaped, abstract plywood elements that playfully revolve around one another when hung. The materials used are high-quality aircraft plywood, with all the biometric shapes finished in black lacquer. The Plywood Mobile has a width of 320mm and height of 400mm. It can hang at varying lengths depending on personal taste.
