PH 5 Monochrome Suspension Lamp
The PH 5 Monochrome Suspension Lamp was designed by Poul Henningsen for the brand Louis Poulsen. Danish designer Henningsen started out as a traditional functionalistic architect before his interests changed and led him to designing the lighting accessories that have made him famous. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen goes back to 1925 and continued until Poulsen passed away. Henningsen's work seeks to express the relationship between shadows, illumination, colour and how lighting accessories can bring out these elements, or 'shaping light', as he calls it.
. The designer developed the PH 5 Series in 1958 in response to lightbulb manufacturers constantly changing the size of incandescent bulbs which was frustrating. The PH 5 Monochrome Suspension Lamp is so called because it has a 50cm diameter. This iconic lamp gives light that has no glare at all. This is thanks to the deliberate layering of shades and the anti-glare disc. It was designed with a reflective three-shade system with the goal of directing most of the light downwards. It also gives out light laterally which makes it self illuminating. A cone and small reflector in the pendant warm the illumination given off by the lamp. Available in various colours and finishes, the PH 5 Monochrome Suspension Lamp has a height of 26.7cm and a cable length of 300cm.
